URBAN MISSIONARY ENCOURAGEMENT

On the 4th August we gathered PBC urban missionaries for an afternoon of sharing and encouragement. What is an “urban missionary”? The term is used to describe people who are either working or volunteering in such a way that they are bringing kingdom to hurting places of our city. They are not missionaries in far away lands, but local. They are not necessarily “evangelising” through words but they are living out the love of Jesus and reaching out in meaningful and tangible ways to share Jesus’ love. Many of us are urban missionaries and we don’t even know it.

On the Sunday we heard from people who are hosting young people from poorer communities in their homes and providing maths tutoring, to counselling with victims of crime, to loving on children in prisons, to working with the homeless, to encouraging caregivers, to volunteering at Beautiful Gate, to building friendship with gang members, to reading to children, to providing eye care in rural places and more.

Not only did we hear about what each other are doing, but we spent time in prayer asking Holy Spirit for specific words of blessing and encouragement for each other.

We hope to meet three times a year for a time of prayer and encouragement, and also get input on a topic of interest that is relevant across the various ways we work out our urban missions.
